"It was Pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels." - St. Augustine
In what most people refer to as the “Seven Deadly Sins” in Proverbs 16:16-19, every single one of these sins are things that have their root in pride:
“There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.”
Jews and Christians must be constantly aware of being preoccupied with ourselves, of being scornful of others. I know I do! There are times in my life where I catch myself being too full of myself.
Humility is never easy, because this world operates on the basis of pride for all that in this world is lust and pride (1 John 2:16). And yet humility is the foundation of all virtue. As Paul writes, Jesus making himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men, humbling himself to the point of death, even death on a cross.
That is humility!
Sadly, I get emails - mostly anonymous - from people who, because of my faith based firm, accuse me of thinking I'm better than others. And yet these people obviously don't understand the point of our faith. To exhalt ourselves would be to be at war with our God. We are called to humble ourselves before the Lord so He will lift us up (James 4:10).
